Hawaiʻi Paniolo Archive
Photographs & Artifacts of the Hawaiian Cowboy
Preserving Hawai‘i’s cowboy heritage for future generations
The Hawaiʻi Paniolo Archive is a digital library created by the Paniolo Preservation Society to safeguard and share the history, culture, and legacy of the Hawaiian cowboy. This growing collection brings together thousands of high-resolution photographs alongside a catalog of historical artifacts, including saddles, bridles, spurs, and other cowboy gear. Together, they tell the story of paniolo life across more than a century. The archive features rare historical photographs from the CAR and Army collections, as well as images of ranch work, rodeo competitions, community celebrations, and family life. Each artifact and image has been cataloged to highlight both its practical use and its cultural significance, reflecting the deep connections between the land, livestock, and community. This library is more than a collection of images and objects—it is a living cultural resource for educators, researchers, and the wider community. By digitizing and organizing the PPS archives and artifact catalog, the Paniolo Preservation Society ensures that the voices, stories, and traditions of Hawaiʻi’s paniolo will continue to inspire future generations.
